Brush Hogging & Mulching across Macomb County

The north end of Macomb County is still farm country and wooded lots, and fields left alone for a few years go back to brush fast. Elite Excavating LLC brush hogs and mulches across Richmond, Armada, Ray, Lenox and Bruce townships from its yard in Capac. Richmond and Armada are each about 18 miles away.

This page is about mowing and mulching: brush and small trees cut and left as a layer on the ground, with the stumps left in. If the ground is going to be built on and needs stumps pulled, see land clearing in Macomb County.

George walks the ground with you, says whether it is a brush hogging job or a mulching job, and gives you a price before any work starts. He runs the machine himself.

Brush hogging or forestry mulching

A brush hog takes a field of weeds and saplings back to something you can mow. A forestry mulching head goes further: it cuts standing brush and small trees and grinds them into a layer of mulch. Nothing is dug up, so the ground stays firm and there is no burn pile and no dump run. Anything bigger than the head can handle comes out with the excavator instead. The brush hogging vs. forestry mulching guide explains which suits what.

Creeks, drains and the parks next door

Northern Macomb drains to the Clinton River. Its North and Middle branches rise in the north of the county, and Wolcott Mill Metropark, a 2,625-acre park entirely within Ray Township, sits on the North Branch. Stony Creek Metropark is in the county too. Plenty of private acreage borders a creek, a drain or park land, so know where your line is before the mulcher goes into a treeline.

Macomb County Public Works administers 475 county drains. If a ditch you want cut back is one of them, ask Public Works before any work is done on it.

Trails, fence lines and wet corners

Mulching is a good way to open a walking trail, a hunting lane or a fence line you can get equipment down again. The trails and food plots guide covers that kind of work. Wet corners are usually cut when they are driest or frozen, so the machine does not rut them, and the timing is settled at the estimate.

Keeping a field back once it is open

Mulch breaks down and feeds the ground, which suits a field going back to pasture or hay. Once the field is open, a seasonal cut keeps it there, and the sooner the brush is cut the less there is to take down. If the plan changes to a building site, the stumps can come out later as a clearing job.

Which parts of Macomb County do you mulch and brush hog?

Mostly the northern townships: Richmond, Armada, Ray, Lenox and Bruce, and the towns around them. Larger jobs further south are looked at case by case.

Can you mulch a trail through woods next to a Macomb County metropark?

On your own land, yes. Know where your line is first, and mark it so the cut stays on your side.

What decides the cost of forestry mulching in Macomb County?

The size of the area, how thick and tall the growth is and how easy it is to reach. George walks it and gives you a price before work starts. The estimate is free. The forestry mulching cost guide explains the factors.

Do the stumps come out when you mulch?

No. Mulching cuts at ground level and leaves the roots in, which keeps the ground firm. If stumps need to come out, that is a clearing job.

Can a ditch bank on a county drain be mulched in Macomb County?

Ask Macomb County Public Works first. Once you know what is allowed along the drain, the rest of the ground can be cut as planned.
