The city counted 12,117 people in the 2020 census. Its eastern edge follows the St. Clair County line. It was once split between Macomb and St. Clair counties, but the boundary was changed in the 1970s and the whole city is now in Macomb County.
M-29 is Main Street. It runs west to I-94 and east around Anchor Bay toward Algonac, and the city gets its freeway access from I-94. Mount Clemens, the county seat, is about ten miles to the southwest.
The town is old. Settlement started in 1796, the village was platted as Ashley in 1845 and renamed New Baltimore in 1867, and it became a city in 1931. Lumber, shipping and manufacturing came first, and the town later became a resort destination.

Lake level ground and wet yards
New Baltimore sits at about 584 feet above sea level, close to the level of the lake. Of the city's 6.7 square miles, about two are water. On ground that flat and that low, rain has few places to go, so a yard that holds water against a house usually needs the grade fixed before anything else.
