Rochester Hills was Avon Township until November 20, 1984, when the township became a city. The city counted 76,300 people in 2020. Shelby Township in Macomb County is its neighbor to the east, Troy is to the south and Auburn Hills to the west, with the separate city of Rochester tucked in on the east side.
Two state highways cross it. M-59 crosses the city, and M-150, Rochester Road, starts at the M-59 interchange at exit 46 and runs north to Tienken Road in Rochester. Oakland University is also in the city.

Hilly ground and where the water goes
The name is accurate. Ground in Rochester Hills runs from about 690 feet above sea level to more than 1,000 feet, which is a lot more rise and fall than the flat farm ground around Capac. On a sloped lot, grading is about steering water around the house and the drive instead of letting it cut a path straight through the yard.
The Clinton River and Paint Creek both run through the area, and the Clinton carries on east through Shelby Township toward Lake St. Clair.
