Pole Barn Pads across Macomb County

Pole barns go up on the rural side of Macomb County: Richmond Township in the northeast corner, Ray Township in the north-central part of the county, Armada, Lenox and Bruce. Elite Excavating LLC builds the pads from its yard in Capac. Richmond and Armada are each about 18 miles away and Romeo about 22.

A barn is only as straight as the pad under it. Pad size, elevation and setback come from your builder or your print, and the pad is built to those numbers. If your builder has a print, that is all George needs.

He walks the site with you, looks at where the water goes, and gives you a price before any work starts. He runs the equipment himself.

Permits come from the township and the county

Zoning and building permits for a barn come from your township, or from the city or village if the property sits inside one. Ask them about the permit and where the barn may sit before the builder sets the elevation. The pole barn permit guide covers the questions to ask.

Two county offices may also be involved. Macomb County Public Works issues soil erosion permits for most of the county, which matters on a larger pad or one near a creek. If the barn needs a new drive off a county road, the approach is permitted by the Macomb County Department of Roads. Confirm both before the dirt moves.

Which way the water runs

A pad sitting in a low spot collects water against the posts. In Macomb County, the Clinton River watershed covers most of the north: Ray Township lies entirely within it, and tributaries carry Richmond Township's water southwest to the Clinton. The east side of Richmond Township drains toward the Belle River instead. Either way, the ground around the pad is shaped so water leaves it before the build starts. If a ditch next to the site is a county drain, ask Public Works before anything is done to it.

What goes into the pad

Topsoil comes off first and is stockpiled for final grade. Fill goes in and is compacted in lifts, one layer at a time, so the pad does not settle under the slab or the posts. Stone goes on top to the builder's spec and the surface is shot level. Access stays open so the build crew can get trucks in. What changes the price of a pad is explained in the pole barn pad cost guide.

Fill and stone come in by truck, and MCDR's seasonal weight restrictions in early spring can move a delivery date. That is discussed at the estimate.

Clearing, the drive and the rest of the site

If trees are in the way, they come out first. See land clearing in Macomb County. A garage or shed pad is the same job with a smaller footprint, and the drive to the barn can be priced on the same walk-through.

Who issues pole barn permits in Macomb County?

Your township, or the city or village if the property is inside one. Check zoning and the building permit with them before the builder sets the pad elevation.

What sets the price of a pole barn pad in Macomb County?

The size of the pad, how much fill and stone the ground needs and how far the material travels. George walks the site and gives you a price before work starts. The estimate is free.

Can a barn pad go in on low ground in Richmond or Ray Township?

Often, with fill brought up to the builder's elevation and the ground around the pad shaped to carry water away. George will say what the spot needs at the walk-through.

Do you build pads for garages and sheds in Macomb County?

Yes. It is the same work with a smaller pad.
