The township counted 45,376 people in the 2020 census. It has no incorporated villages. Instead it is a set of unincorporated communities, from Anchor Bay Shores and Anchor Bay Harbor near the water to Chesterfield, Milton and Point Lakeview further inland.
Lenox Township and the village of New Haven lie to the north. Ira Township in St. Clair County and the city of New Baltimore lie to the east, Harrison Township to the south, and Macomb Township to the west. About three of the township's thirty or so square miles are water.
I-94 runs through the township. M-29 starts at the I-94 interchange at exit 243 and runs east to New Baltimore and around Anchor Bay, while west of the freeway the same road carries on as 23 Mile Road. The east end of M-59 is at I-94 on the line with Harrison Township, near Selfridge Air National Guard Base.

Low ground near Anchor Bay
The southeast side of the township is shaped by Anchor Bay, with docks, pleasure boats and marine businesses. The township sits at about 590 feet above sea level, close to the level of the lake, and the Salt River runs between Point Lakeview and the lake. On low, flat ground like this, water has few places to go, so a yard that holds water usually needs the grade set before anything else.
