Pole Barn Pads across St. Clair County
Pole barns go up all over the rural side of St. Clair County, in townships such as Mussey, Berlin, Emmett, Riley, Kenockee and Wales. Elite Excavating LLC is based in Capac, in Mussey Township, so pads in the western half of the county are a short haul, and the rest of the county is covered too.
A barn is only as straight as the pad under it. Pad size, elevation and setback come from your builder or your print, and the pad is built to those numbers. If your builder has a print, that is all George needs.
He walks the site with you, looks at where the water goes, and gives you a price before any work starts. He runs the equipment himself, so the pad is built by the person who priced it.
Check with the township first
Zoning for barns and garages is set locally, by the township or by the city if the property is inside one. Each of the county's nineteen townships has its own office, so ask yours about permits and placement before the builder sets the elevation. Once you have the numbers, the pad gets built to them. The pole barn pad guide covers what to ask.
Flat farm ground still needs a grade
A lot of the open ground in the county looks level, but flat ground holds water. A pad set in a low spot collects water against the posts, and heavy ground is slow to drain. The ground around the pad is shaped so water moves away before the build starts. If the property sits beside a ditch that is a county drain, the St. Clair County Drain Commissioner is the office to ask before anything is done to it. Wet ground elsewhere on the property can be looked at on the same visit. See drainage solutions.
What goes into the pad
Topsoil comes off first and is stockpiled for later. Fill goes in and is compacted in lifts, one layer at a time, so the pad does not settle under the slab or the posts. Stone goes on top to the builder's spec, and the surface is shot level. Access stays open so the build crew can get their trucks in.
Fill and stone come in by truck, and spring weight restrictions on posted roads can affect delivery dates. That gets discussed at the estimate.
Garages, sheds and the drive to the barn
A garage or shed pad is the same job with a smaller footprint. If the barn needs a drive or the site needs trees out first, both can be priced on the same walk-through. See gravel driveways in St. Clair County and land clearing in St. Clair County.

Pole Barn Pads in St. Clair County: questions
Not seeing yours? Call (989) 702-2426 and ask George, or read the guides.
Do I need a permit for a pole barn in St. Clair County?
Ask your township or city building and zoning office. Rules differ between the county's townships, so check before the builder sets the pad elevation.
What does a pole barn pad cost in St. Clair County?
It depends on the size of the pad, how much fill and stone the ground needs and how far the material travels. George walks the site and gives you a price before work starts. The estimate is free.
What do I need ready before the pad is built?
The pad size, the elevation and where you want it. A builder's print covers all of that.
Can the pad go in on wet or low ground?
Often, with the grade around it shaped to carry water away and fill brought up to the builder's elevation. George will say what the spot needs at the walk-through.
Which St. Clair County townships do you build pads in?
All of them. Mussey Township, where the yard is, and Berlin, Emmett, Riley, Wales and Kenockee are the closest, but the whole county is covered.
