The township counted 91,663 people in the 2020 census, up from 79,580 in 2010, and it is the most populous civil township in Michigan. It grew fast. Between 2000 and 2008 alone its population rose by close to half.
Before the subdivisions, this was farm ground. The founders came for flat, fertile land near the Clinton River, and many of the early settlers were German. The Middle Branch of the Clinton River runs through the township, and logs were once floated down it from Wolcott Mill in Ray Township to the sawmills.
Romeo Plank Road is the old route through the township and follows the river on its west side. Macomb Corners sits on it at 25 Mile Road, and Waldenburg lies a few miles south along the same road. Meade is in the northeast on the Ray Township line, and Mount Clemens is about seven miles south.

Flat ground and the Middle Branch
Flat ground is easy to build on and hard to drain. With little fall across a lot, water sits where the yard has settled, against a foundation or across a drive. On older farm ground the old field tile and ditches may still be there under a newer yard. The fix starts with shooting the grade, and pipe goes in only where the ground needs it. County drains and roads
The Macomb County Public Works Office looks after the county drains, 475 of them, which carry stormwater toward Lake St. Clair. The same office runs the county soil erosion permit program. If the ditch along your property is a county drain, or the job opens up a large area of soil, check with that office before work starts.
A new drive onto a county road goes through the Macomb County Department of Roads. Hall Road, M-59, runs along the south side of the township, and a drive onto a state highway involves the Michigan Department of Transportation. Building and zoning questions go to Macomb Township.
