Working in Dryden
The village of Dryden had 1,023 residents at the 2020 census, and Dryden Township around it had 4,799. Both share the 48428 ZIP code. Outside the village, the township is fields, woodlots and homes on acreage, with about three quarters of a square mile of water among its 36 square miles.
That ground keeps the same jobs coming up: gravel drives that have rutted or washed out, fields gone to brush, and new pads for barns and garages. Gravel driveways in Lapeer County and brush hogging and forestry mulching in Lapeer County cover those in more depth.
Elite Excavating LLC is owner-operated. George walks the job, gives you a price and runs the equipment himself. Around Dryden that covers all eight services on this site.
The estimate is free. Call (989) 702-2426 or send the contact form with the address and what needs doing.
A village with a long history
Dryden was settled in 1836, about a mile north of where the village stands now, and first went by Amboy. It was later called Lamb's Corners after John M. Lamb, who bought the land in 1846, before taking the name of the poet John Dryden. The village was incorporated in 1887, and the township itself was first called Lomond Township. The Dryden Depot and the Ladies Library Hall carry historical markers, and General Squier Memorial Park is in the township.
Older lots in the village often have drives and yards that have settled over the years, while newer homes out in the township sit on ground that was farmed until recently. Both need the grade checked before anything else.
Regrading a gravel drive
Most rutted drives can be brought back by cutting the high spots, reshaping the crown so water runs off both sides and adding stone where the base has thinned. A drive that has failed underneath needs more. Our guide on how to fix a gravel driveway explains the difference, and George will tell you which one yours needs at the walk-through.
Lapeer County offices
A new drive or culvert onto a county road goes through the Lapeer County Road Commission. A county drain goes through the Lapeer County Drain Commissioner. Check with Dryden Township, or the village for a lot inside it, before a house or pole barn goes up. Work in a stream channel or on its banks goes through Michigan EGLE.
The road commission also posts seasonal weight restrictions each spring. Our guide to frost laws explains how they affect stone deliveries. Check the current notice.

Is Dryden, MI a village or a township?
Both names are used. The village of Dryden sits inside Dryden Township in Lapeer County, and both share the 48428 ZIP code.
Can a rutted gravel driveway in Dryden be regraded instead of replaced?
Often, yes. If the base is still sound, cutting the ruts, reshaping the crown and adding stone fixes it. If the base has failed, it needs rebuilding. George checks which at the walk-through.
Do you mow overgrown fields around Dryden?
Yes. Brush hogging handles tall grass and light brush, and forestry mulching takes on saplings and thicker growth.
Who do I call about a driveway culvert in Dryden Township?
For a county road, the Lapeer County Road Commission. Confirm their current requirements before the drive goes in.
