Land Clearing across St. Clair County

St. Clair County is where Elite Excavating LLC is based. Capac is a village in Mussey Township, in the western part of the county, and most weeks the equipment does not leave the county. Clearing jobs here run from a single grown-in fence row behind a house to acreage that has been left long enough to turn into woods.

The county has nineteen townships, and the western and northern ones are largely farm ground and wooded lots: Mussey, Berlin, Emmett, Riley, Brockway, Kenockee, Wales, Lynn and Grant among them. That is the kind of country where clearing is most often the first job on a property, before a house, a barn or a drive.

George walks the ground first, marks what stays and what goes, and gives you a price before anything is cut. He runs the machine himself. Debris is hauled off or mulched on site, and the ground is left graded well enough to work with.

Rivers, drains and the ground in between

Much of the county drains toward the St. Clair River. The Black River runs down through the northern part of the county to the St. Clair River at Port Huron. The Belle River crosses the south and west on its way to Marine City, and the Pine River reaches the St. Clair River at the city of St. Clair. In between, farm ground is laced with ditches, and many of them are county drains.

Clearing along a ditch bank or a creek is a different job from clearing an open lot. If the ditch is a county drain, talk to the St. Clair County Drain Commissioner first. Its office is in the Road Commission building at 21 Airport Drive in St. Clair Township. Work in a natural stream goes through Michigan EGLE.

Clearing for a build

Where a house, a garage or a barn is coming, the same visit usually covers the site prep. The trees and stumps come out, topsoil is stripped and stockpiled, the pad is cut to grade and the ground is compacted so the next trade can start. If a barn is going up, see pole barn pads in St. Clair County. If the lot needs a way in, see gravel driveways in St. Clair County.

Ruts get knocked down at the end, and the surface is shaped so water runs off it instead of standing in the tracks.

Clearing, mulching or brush hogging

Not every overgrown property needs stumps pulled. Full clearing suits ground that will be built on or farmed. Forestry mulching cuts standing brush and small trees and leaves them as a layer on the ground, with no burn pile and no hauling, so it suits a woodlot you want to walk or a field edge you want to keep back. Brush hogging takes a field that has gone to brush back to something you can mow. The estimate says which fits. See forestry mulching and brush hogging.

Where the equipment goes

From Capac the machines run out along I-69, which crosses the county east and west to the Blue Water Bridge at Port Huron, and along M-19, which runs north and south through Yale, Emmett and Memphis. Lapeer Road, the old M-21, runs past Goodells County Park toward Port Huron. A clearing job anywhere along those routes is a short haul from the yard. The company also clears land across Lapeer County and in the Macomb County towns to the south.

Questions about this work

Land Clearing in St. Clair County: questions

Not seeing yours? Call (989) 702-2426 and ask George, or read the guides.

Which parts of St. Clair County do you clear land in?

All of it. The yard is in Capac, in Mussey Township, and the equipment covers the county from Yale and Emmett to Goodells, St. Clair, Marine City and Fort Gratiot.

Can you clear along a county drain on my property in St. Clair County?

Talk to the St. Clair County Drain Commissioner before any work is done on a county drain. Once you know what is allowed, George can clear the rest of the ground and keep off the drain as needed.

What does land clearing cost in St. Clair County?

It depends on how much is standing, how big it is, whether stumps come out and whether the debris is hauled off or mulched. George walks it with you and gives you a price before any work starts. The estimate is free.

Will you leave the cleared ground ready to build on?

If a build is coming, the site prep can be part of the same job: topsoil stripped, the pad cut to grade and the ground compacted for the next trade.

Can I keep some trees when the lot is cleared?

Yes. Walk the lot with George, point out what stays, and it gets marked before anything is cut.
