The township was organized in 1827 and counted 28,165 people in the 2020 census. Bruce Township lies to the north, Ray Township to the east, Shelby Township to the south and Oakland County to the west. The village of Romeo reaches into the northeast corner.
M-53 is the main road north and south. The unincorporated community of Washington sits just west of the freeway, around 26 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue. Mount Vernon is in the southwest at Mt. Vernon and 28 Mile roads, and Clifton Mills is near 31 Mile and Mt. Vernon roads.
