Driveways across St. Clair County
Elite Excavating LLC builds and repairs gravel driveways across its home county. The yard is in Capac, and Yale and Emmett are both close by. Goodells is about 16 miles out, St. Clair about 22, Marine City about 24 and Fort Gratiot about 30.
On a gravel drive the base does the work. A drive with stone thrown over soft ground ruts by spring, and the clay ground common near the river holds water if the drive is not shaped to shed it. The drive is cut, the base is built and compacted in lifts, and the surface is crowned so water runs off both edges.
George walks the drive with you, explains whether it needs a rebuild or a repair, and gives you a price before any work starts. He runs the equipment himself.
The approach, the ditch and the culvert
Where a drive meets a county road it usually crosses the road ditch, and a culvert goes under it. For a culvert in a road ditch, St. Clair County directs residents to the St. Clair County Road Commission at 21 Airport Drive in St. Clair Township. If the ditch is a county drain away from the road, it is the St. Clair County Drain Commissioner, in the same building. A drive onto a state highway such as M-19, M-25 or M-29 goes through the Michigan Department of Transportation.
Confirm with the right office before the drive is cut in. More on how that works is in the driveway culvert permit guide.
Repairs that last past spring
A drive that has gone bad is not fixed by more stone on top. Potholes, washboard and ruts get cut out and re-based, and a drive that has lost its shape is regraded and crowned again. You will be told at the estimate which one yours needs. For lots and long drives, asphalt millings make a hard, dust-free surface for less than paving. Storage lots and parking areas get the same treatment.
Spring weight restrictions and stone deliveries
Michigan posts seasonal weight restrictions, often called frost laws, while the ground thaws in spring. MDOT sets them on state highways, and county road commissions set their own on county roads, usually but not always matching the state. Loaded trucks hauling stone are affected, which can move the start date of a driveway job. Check the current notice and posted signs, and see Michigan frost laws explained.
How the job runs
Most residential drives take a day or two once the equipment is on site. Long or wet ones take longer. Stone and gravel are hauled in and spread while the machine is there, so nothing is left in a pile at the end of the drive. If the drive leads to a new barn, the pad can be priced on the same visit: see pole barn pads in St. Clair County.

Driveways: New drives cut in, tired ones brought back, and lots resurfaced — built on a proper base and crowned so the water runs off the edges.

Driveways in St. Clair County: questions
Not seeing yours? Call (989) 702-2426 and ask George, or read the guides.
Who handles driveway culverts on county roads in St. Clair County?
For a culvert in a road ditch, the county points residents to the St. Clair County Road Commission. A county drain away from the road goes to the Drain Commissioner. Confirm with them before work starts.
What does a gravel driveway cost in St. Clair County?
It depends on the length, the ground under it, the culvert and the material. George walks the drive and gives you a price for that job before anything starts. The estimate is free.
Do frost laws affect when my driveway can be built?
They can. Spring weight restrictions limit loaded trucks on posted roads, and stone comes in by truck. The timing gets discussed at the estimate, and the current notice decides it.
Can you put asphalt millings on a drive in St. Clair County?
Yes. Millings go down on drives, storage lots and parking areas and make a hard, dust-free surface.
Which St. Clair County towns do you build driveways in?
All of them, from Capac, Yale and Emmett to Goodells, St. Clair, Marine City and Fort Gratiot.
